I have been struggling with this Owl Bear challenge for a while now. It asks for a complete reimagining of the subject matter.
To design a beast so alien that owl bear seems the only way to rationalise a description.
This fella does not meet the mark, but I like him.

Yes invented beasts count as characters for the purposes of this exercise.
Corel Sketchpad (part of the tablets bundled software) Many hours, many of them due to the software’s propensity to crash whilst doing just about anything, including saving. Thus many elements were done more than once.
I’m happy to be finished it.
I would like to recommend sketchpad because the brushes and tools behave superbly. However the instability ensures that I will not be using it again until it gets a significant update.

These gentle giants have recently been shown to have intelligence exceeding that of a chimp, though they are extremely sedate in the application of it. Marsh trolls even have a simple -recently decoded- language it includes 3 colours, individual numeral values up to 7 conversation sounds like a mix of bovine moans and whistling and much like Entish everything takes a long time to say.
Conversations between these largely solitary creatures seem most centred upon digestion, the weather and the sexual lives of the birds which build their nests in the dorsal sedges of most adults. Unlike their stonekin cousins Marsh trolls are very passive with the exception of their apparently amazing mating period and in defence of their young during the first years of their life, after which they have no known predators thanks to their large size and subdermal chitinous plates.
Fortunately they are believed to only mate three times in their life , at the extraordinary ages of 50, 82 and 120, gestation exceeds 3 years in length and only ever produces a single child. children are nurtured for an average of 15 years , average lifespan often exceeds 200 years.

I am asked “are you drawing Toad, from wind in the willows?” and on reflection my answer of
‘No, if i were drawing toad I would put him behind the wheel of a vehicle’
was not entirely true.
The Vodyanoi – amphibious water shapers – are one of the many remarkable races that populate China Mieville’s extraordinary Bas-Lag novels. Which are remarkable books, but as my mother aptly put it, almost pornographically dark.
